Poetry workshop
We have had the pleasure of having poet, Jack Thacker visit Ocean Academy to lead poetry workshops with groups of our Year 5 and Year 6 children.
Jack has previously won the Charles Causley International Poetry Competition and was the poet in residence at the Museum of English Rural Life in Reading. More recently, Jack has been awarded a residency at the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole. Since then, he has been working with local schools to inspire children’s love of poetry.
The children at Ocean had the theme of ‘Osprey’ and could work individually or collaboratively on their poems. During the workshops the children discussed what poetry is and then Jack went on to provide tips and insights surrounding how to create vivid poetry. The children also had a chance to hear why poetry is so important to Jack – how it can help to express feelings, thoughts and emotions and how it can help heal.
